Frequently Asked Questions
I have never been to church before, or I am not Methodist ...
It doesn’t matter what background you come from! Everyone is welcome to come and join us in worship. Even if you only stop in once, we just hope that our church will make an impact on you and help you to understand God a little better!
What size church is FUMC?
We usually have around 200 - 250 people at our Contemporary Worship Service, and a smaller crowd of around 50 - 100 people at each of our Traditional Worship Services.
What is the difference between Contemporary and Traditional Worship?
Here at FUMC our Contemporary Service features upbeat and lively music from keyboards, drums, and guitars and is led by our Praise Team. The atmosphere is very casual (so you don't have to get dressed up) and greatly relies on our great audio/visual system. Our Traditional Service features music from our church organ, piano, and our choirs. Singing hymns and reading of creeds and prayers play a major part in this service and the atmosphere is more formal than that of the Contemporary Service.
Do I have to be a member to take Communion?
We take communion on the first Sunday of the month and during special services throughout the year. The United Methodist Church has an open table where EVERYONE is invited. You do not have to be a member of the church or even be Methodist to take part. Communion represents a personal and lasting relationship with God through Jesus Christ. People of all ages are welcome.
Do you have Sunday School?
We offer Sunday School for children in preschool through 6th grade at 9:30am on Sundays in our Education Wing and Sunday School for 7th-12th graders at 11:00am. We also offer Sunday School classes for adults at both 9:30 and 11:00am. The Nursery is also in the Education Wing and available for children from infancy through 5 years old. If you aren’t sure how to get somewhere, just ask a greeter or anyone else around you and they will gladly show you the way.
What do I wear?
There is no dress code! Some people choose to get dressed up, but most people simply wear casual and comfortable clothing.
Where do I park?
If you are coming to the Contemporary Service, it is best to park outside the Family Life Center (building with the flagpoles). Other parking is available over by the Sanctuary and Thompson Hall. There is parking for the Sanctuary right outside the front and office doors. Also, we ask that you try to park a little further away if you are able as we wish to keep the closer spaces available for those who have difficulty walking.
Where do I go?
If you are checking out the Contemporary Service, pretty much follow the crowds of other people. You enter through the white doors and will be greeted and receive a bulletin. You can ask a greeter or anyone around for help with anything. Then, just pick yourself a seat and grab some snacks and coffee.
When do I need to arrive?
Plan to arrive a few minutes before the service to allow time for parking and to get seated. If you have young children who wish to stay in the nursery during worship, leave a few extra minutes to get them settled.
Is the church equipped for persons with disabilities?
Of course! There are several reserved handicap parking spaces by all of the main doors of the church. We also have wheelchair accessible entrances and restrooms located in the building.
How can I become a member of FUMC?
We host membership classes at various times during the year. The class consists of two group meetings with the pastor and finishes with full membership in our church! You can ask one of our pastors for more information.
